Morgaine Carey

Description: Small-boned and undeniably thin, Morgaine stands only 4’6 and resembles nothing so much as an outsized and wingless bowtruckle. Her dark hair falls to her shoulderblades and will only manage a hint of a wave on the very best days. On most days, it hangs perfectly straight and resists even the most torturous attempts to introduce a style to it. She wears it either down or gathered into a single braid. Her face is small-featured, olive-skinned, and might manage a sort of vague, ethereal prettiness if it was not almost constantly screwed up in a scowl of determination or arranged along decidedly dour lines. Her eyes, generally considered to be her best feature, are large for that face and are an indeterminate blue-green color.

Personality: Morgaine’s view on life is that if she always expects the worst, some of her surprises may be pleasant ones. Prudish, sarcastic, and more or less selfish, Morgaine rarely goes out of her way to do anything except look out for her own hide, the one object she will openly show concern for. She lacks almost all traces of sentimentality, sociality, diplomacy, or even common politeness, generally saying what she wants to say without regard for the feelings of others, as they obviously aren’t concerned about hers. This tendency will be abandoned if the individual in question shows signs of becoming violent in the near future, at which point she can manage civility, if not pleasantness She does like to feel sorry for herself and blame others, most commonly her parents and older sister, for everything that goes wrong in her life.

History: Morgaine Victoria Carey of the Savannah Careys was born on May 23, the second of Alasdair and Lorena Carey’s three surviving children. Unlike sister Gwenhwyfar, she recognized early on that her strange, distant mother and often violent father were not likely to ever approve of her and didn’t waste her time trying to earn their affection. Deciding that anonymity was probably the safest route, she quickly became known for her taciturn, often sullen ways, general boringness, and complete lack of social graces. This was reinforced after a traumatic event when she was five that she refuses to speak about to this day. Though it successfully achieved her goal of not being noticed, it had one unfortunate side affect: she was kept in virtual seclusion throughout her childhood because of the possibility she would say the wrong thing at the wrong time if she was allowed to go in public.

A turning point in Morgaine’s life came when Gwenhwyfar left home for Sonora Academy, leaving Morgaine alone with her parents and baby brother Edmond. More to be comforting than anything, Gwen promised her that she’d definitely be coming back in June and afterwards would never leave her there by herself with them again. This plan went south when Gwen managed to so infuriate their father at the Sonora Alumni Banquet that he attempted to get her disowned and, failing to do so, threw her out of Bellevue House and made her go live with his crazy half-sister, Rosamund. Though this banishment was only partially Gwen’s fault, Morgaine still saw her failure to keep her word as a betrayal, leading to the rise of a passionate resentment against her sister.

Morgaine managed to keep her nose remarkably clean as the Savannah Careys’ situation continued to deteriorate when Alasdair, never what a Mindhealer would refer to as entirely stable, went on his second ‘decline’ of her lifetime. Needless to say, she was more than pleased to escape to Sonora, though that pleasure soon turned to horror and a paranoid fear for her life when she was Sorted into Pecari and managed to get in a fight with Gwenhwyfar before the brown color completely faded.

Fear: Morgaine’s worst fear is betrayal. Unfortunately for those who have to live with her, she sees it everywhere.

Desire: To become matriarch of the Savannah Careys, the first woman ever to do so and the second woman to ever lead a Carey branch at all.

Other Info: Morgaine’s wand is cypress, seven-and-a-quarter inches, with a Augurey feather core.

The being at Sonora currently ranking highest in her affections is her cat, a large white female named Isadora.
