Gwenhwyfar Carey
Description: Tall and slim with high-cheekboned, sculpted features. She has long golden hair and sapphire blue eyes over a straight nose and a pretty smile. Most people think she looks older than she is.

Personality: Gwenhwyfar, though she prefers for her friends to call her Gwen, is very self-analytical and often comes across as being eccentric or, to some people, outright crazy.A very complex person, she thinks of herself as having two distinct personalities, Gwen and Gwenhwyfar. Gwen is a good-humored girl with a cheerfully if slightly ineptly friendly manner. Gwenhwyfar is a cold, calculating pureblood princess who everyone loves to hate.Neither of her "masks", as she calls them, ever appears entirely on its own, though Gwen typically has more of Gwenhwyfar in her than Gwenhwyfar does of Gwen.Although she has a very heavy Southern accent, she speaks as a well-educated blueblood. Loyalty to family and friends is very important to her. She thinks ahead about things, often far ahead. She can't stand egomaniacs or those she terms 'preps'. She often prefers manipulation to open confrontation, but will bring an issue out if she has to. She prides herself on being able to accept what she can't change.

History: Born in Savannah, Georgia, Gwenhwyfar Elaine Carey was the fourth of Alasdair and Lorena Carey's ten children and the first child to live past her christening. Of her six younger siblings, only two, a fifteen-months younger sister named Morgaine and a seven-years younger brother named Edmond, survived. The lost seven are never mentioned.

Gwenhwyfar was raised to the song that she was a Carey and thus a member of one of the South's largest and most influential families and that her grandfather had been the head of the Southern Wizarding Convention. Her life among Savannah's pureblood elite seemed very sheltered, and would have been had Gwenhwyfar not taken it on herself to learn about the happenings of the world around her and if her parents hadn't developed a violent aversion to their two daughters. She took the brunt of their spite for Morgaine and learned very early that she could trust only her siblings at home because her mother and father were her enemies. She soon made her younger brother, Edmond, the center of her world.

She saw Sonora as a chance to get away from the Careys once and for all by learning enough to survive in the outside world. She is using her family's order to find herself a husband against them by looking for one who would insist on her being out of Carey control. As everyone's only eleven, she doesn't expect to get any proposals just yet. While family loyalty is more important to her than anything else, she doesn't think she can live with her family forever without it driving her crazy.

Fear: Breaking down and crying in front of the Family Council, the all-male circle of family division heads, that runs the network of Careys and Carey servants.

Desire: Prove her worth to her skeptical family by doing something truly spectacular. She doesn't think she stands much of a chance of doing that, however.

Other Info: Many other families refer to the Careys as the House of Kudzu, a term derived from the Virginia creeper vines surrounding both the Carey family seal and the seals of each family division and the way the family seems to have spread across the South and taken root while masquerading as a blessing, like kudzu.

The family originated in Virginia, meaning the Virginia, or Richmond, Careys are in charge while the Savannah, or Georgia, Charleston, or South Carolina, and New Orleans, or Louisiana, Careys are fierce rivals for position. The Charlotte or North Carolina Careys are largely unpolitical and largely ignored by the rest of the family.

The Southern Wizarding Convention, to which the Careys belong, was a splinter group formed at the same time as the Southern Baptist Convention during the War Between the States.Although membership is shrinking, the SWC still exists and will as long as its old families remain stubborn.

All of the Savannah Careys, including Gwenhwyfar, are Roman Catholics in a very Protestant part of Savannah.

Gwenhwyfar's sister Morgaine will join her at Sonora next year, to both of their delight.
